______________
Now that autumn has finally delivered with chilly nights and misty days, a mug of warm apple cider is a welcome treat.
This recipe from the American Instute for Cancer Research includes ginger and turmeric, which Carilion Clinic medical oncologist Madmaja Mallidi, M.D., recommends for her patients to reduce inflammation and cardiovascular risk. (She also recommends garlic for that purpose, but that probably wouldn't make for such a delicious drink!)
In addition to fighting inflammation, the gingerol in fresh ginger has been shown to help with indigestion, nausea and infections.
Bright yellow turmeric contains cancer-fighting compounds called curcuminoids. Its anti-inflammatory properties are known to improve arthritis symptoms and potentially reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease.
Besides their health benefits, zesty ginger and spicy turmeric pair beautifully with sweet apple cider.
They probably go pretty well with a comfortable chair, a good book and a fireplace, too.
