It’s a simple fact. We are all sitting more and moving less. Whether it is at work or at home, we are just not moving enough.
According to the American College of Sports Medicine, the recommended guidelines for minimum physical activity is 2.5 hours a week of moderate activity or 1.25 hours a week of vigorous physical activity, at the very least. However, what we really should be getting is five hours a week or more of moderate physical activity.
But even if you are exercising for an hour every day, what are you doing for the rest of the day? Most likely sitting.
Sitting constantly flexes our knees and hips, and poor posture while sitting leads to improper movement patterns when we do get up and move around. If we do squeeze in that workout during lunch, our stiff bodies prevent us from exercising in optimal positions, which can result in injury from poor mechanics when performing a variety of exercises.
So what can you do? Stretch it out! The easy stretches below will get you moving and realign your body, helping to reverse the negative effects of poor posture.
Before performing any exercise consult your physician for clearance. Stop exercising immediately if you feel lightheaded, dizzy or have chest pains.
