When Stephen Joyce felt a familiar pain in his hip, he knew it would have to be replaced. It wasn't until he met with Carilion Clinic orthopaedic trauma surgeon Trevor Owen, M.D., however, that he learned the hip replacement he'd had on the other side more than a decade earlier had also deteriorated. He would need to have both hips replaced.

Stephen had spent his career as a bicycle, motorcycle and mounted police officer, and he wasn't ready to slow down. "I really wanted both of these to be done at the same time," he said. "I didn't want to have to go through recovery twice."

Using the bikini incision technique with the direct anterior approach, Dr. Owen was able to make that happen.

"Traditionally that would have been done in a separate setting," said Dr. Owen, "where we would do one surgery and then come back to the operating room six to eight weeks later for a second procedure on the other side."

Instead, he replaced both of Stephen's hips in one trip, and Stephen was back on his bike less than six weeks later riding 10 to 15 miles a day.
