ROSA: Advanced Treatment for Brain Disorders

At Carilion Clinic, robotic tools allow surgeons to use minimally invasive approaches.

One example is ROSA, a stereotactic system used by neurosurgeons to diagnose and treat epilepsy.

“In the past, seizures were always diagnosed by electrodes placed on scalp or on the surface of the brain,” explained Mark R, Witcher, M.D., Ph.D., a Carilion Clinic functional neurosurgeon. “That doesn't give a very clear picture of where the seizures are coming from.”

ROSA uses a precise 3D coordinate system that allows for mapping inside the brain.

The accuracy is much greater than any other technology that is out there, which translates to increased safety for our patients,” said Dr. Witcher. “It also translates to increased comfort for our patients.” 

“For example, in a patient that has an unclear onset of their seizures, we can look in many more regions than we were able to in the past,” he explained. “It also expands the capability of this machine, so we can apply this same safe and precise use of  technology in other regions of the brain and other types of surgeries. It works best for our patients, because it allows us a minimally invasive approach for diagnosis of epilepsy as well as multiple other conditions.”

In addition to patients with epilepsy, those with Parkinson’s disease, behavioral disorders, brain tumors and pituitary gland tumors may also benefit.
